The elves of Gondolin made Orcrist, now you can have your very own from Middle Earth!

Although we know from J.R.R Tolkien’s work that Orcrist was forged in the elven city of Gondolin (also known as the Hidden City), speculation still remains about who the sword originally belonged to. There is speculation that it belonged to the elf lord Etchelion and, if true, it was used to slay the balrog Gothmog. This is interesting because it would eventually be discovered by Thorin Oakenshield and his company of dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf, during their Quest for Erebor (the basis for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey). Orcrist would be claimed by Thorin while its brother sword, Glamdring, would go to Gandalf. Gandalf would go on to use Glamdring to slay the Balrog known as Durin’s Bane in the mines of Moria. In effect, the brother swords vanquished the two most famous balrogs.

Being in Thorin’s possession during most of the Quest for Erebor, he eventually lost Orcrist when it was confiscated by the elf king of the woodland realm known as Thranduil. However, Thorin’s death after the Battle of the Five Armies prompted the elf kin Thranduil to lay the sword upon Thorin’s sarcophagus so that Durin’s Folk of the Lonely Mountains would never again be surprised by an attack. This was in reference to the fact that Orcrist, Glamdring and Sting all glowed blue when orcs came into proximity with them. Another fun fact is that Orcrist bears more of a resemblance to Bilbo’s short sword Sting than it does to its brother sword Glamdring. It is possible that this was due to the fact that sting was forged as a complementary knife to Orcrist.

Presumably, Orcrist would remain upon Thorin’s tomb till the end of days to warn the inhabitants of the Lonely Mountain of any impending threat.
