This stunning Bone Necklace not only looks great, but has wonderful and cultural meaning as well.

The Hei Matau is a carving typically in the shape of a fish hook and of great importance to the New Zealand Maori people. The Hei Matau represent strength, good luck and safe travel across water.

The Fish Hook shape of the Hei Matau is thought to have come from the legend of Maui where Maui using only using only a woven line and a hook made from the jawbone of his grandmother, fished up the North Island of New Zealand. Legend holds that the shape of Hawke Bay is that of the Hei Matau.

The Hei Matau also represents the importance of fishing to Maori and their connection with the God of the Sea – Tangaroa.

This Fish Hook Pendant, or Hei Matau, is made from cow bone and presented in a striking black colour. It’s bold colour and engraved design stands out from the crowd.
