Charming Tui
The Tui is a native New Zealand bird and appears from a distance to be completely black. On closer inspection one will see that the Tui has a multi-coloured cloak of feathers. Bring this stunning native bird into your home with a ceramic Tui from Splashy.
Splashy produces their uniquely New Zealand pieces at their art, pottery and tile studio in Horotiu, near the town of Ngaruawahia in the North Island. Splashy’s ceramic Tui is hand painted by an in house team of talented artists. They employ a special paint that is formulated according to a secret recipe. This gives Splashy products their signature bright tone and colours.
How Splashy’s ceramic Tui is made:
- Soft clay is poured into a mould
- As the clay sets it is gently fettled by a damp sponge
- When the clay is able to be physically handled it is considered ‘greenware’
- This greenware is placed in a bisque kiln and blasted for six to seven hours at 900 degrees Celsius
- The small team of Splashy artists then apply their secret paints to the piece
- This is followed by further blasting in the bisque kiln
- Then it is taken to the glazing kiln and blasted at 1160 degrees Celsius
- It is then inspected for any faults or damage
The entire production process may take up to several days. This produces a high quality and durable ceramic product. Enhance the personality of your home or garden with the distinctive ceramic Tui from Splashy of New Zealand.
