Dip plates to impress!
These remarkable dip plates are made at the Splashy art, pottery and tile studio in Horotiu, New Zealand. They are painted by hand by Splashy’s small and dedicated team of artists. They use special paints that are made according to Splashy’s own secret recipe.
The design is inpired by the easily recognisable shape of New Zealand’s North and South Island. The piece is then subtly finished with New Zealand’s iconic silver fern. The two piece design makes for a versatile dip plate set that is both microvave and dishwasher safe.
How the Islands Dip Plate is made:
- The dip plate starts off as soft clay that is placed into a mould.
- As it hardens, the clay is lightly fettled by a damp sponge.
- Once the clay has hardened enough to be handled, it is consided ‘greenware’.
- The greenware is then placed into a bisque kiln to be blasted for six to seven hours at 900 degrees Celsius.
- Splashy artists then skilfully hand paint each piece with Splashy’s own secret paint mixtures.
- The painted dip plates are then taken back to the bisque kiln and blasted.
- After this it is taken to the glazing kiln where it is once again blasted at 1160 degrees Celsius.
- Lastly, the dip plates are then inspected for any faults or cracks.
Producing these elegant dip plates may take several days. The result is a high quality dip plate that is dishwasher and microwave safe. The Islands Dip Plates would make a great going away present to a travelling kiwi. It also makes for an impressive dip plate to proudly show off New Zealand culture!
