The Mug with fish design is made at the Splashy art, pottery and tile studio in Horotiu, New Zealand.  Here a small team of talented artist are given the creative freedom to come up with their own designs, which they hand paint themselves onto every piece. Splashy employs a special paint made according to a secret recipe that gives Splashy products their bright and cheerful colours.

How Splashy makes their Mugs:

• Soft clay is poured into a cup mould.
• As the clay is hardening it is fettled with a damp sponge.
• When the clay has set enough to be handled it is considered ‘greenware’.
• The greenware is blasted in bisque kiln at 900 degrees Celsius for six to seven hours.
• The cup is then taken out and allowed to cool.
• Once it has cooled, the cup is carefully handpainted by Splashy’s small team of artists.
• After hand painting, the cup is again blasted in the bisque kiln at 900 degrees Celsius.
• This if followed by further blasting in the glazing kiln at 1160 degrees Celsius.
• Finally the cup is checked for any faults or cracks.

The entire production process may take multiple days to complete and the result is a durable and high quality mug. The mug is also dishwasher and microvave safe as it has undergone three blasting processes. This beautifully hand painted mug would make a great gift for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day or Birthdays.
