The Pohutukawa tree which comes from the Myrtle family must be the most well known coastal tree in New Zealand. It is often known as the New Zealand Christmas tree as it presents lushious red flowers in summer. Local Maori also highly regard the tree for it’s strength and ability to survive while perched on cliffs. They call it Rakau Rangatira or ‘chiefly tree’ and is endemic to New Zealand.
