In Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo Baggins is recruited by Thorin Oakenshield and his company of dwarves to undertake the Quest of Erebor to reconquer the Lonely Mountain. The group, along with Gandalf, consistently show their loyalty to each other throughout the journey. In one case, Bilbo Baggins, after finding the One Ring, manages to sneak his way out of the treacherous Misty Mountains. But is haunted by the thought of the dwarves being lost and aimlessly wandering through the goblin infested mountains. Instead of leaving the dwarves to their fate, he decides to head back into the mountains to find them at great peril to himself. The dwarfs also returned the favour in kind to Bilbo. At the beginning of the The Quest of Erebor the dwarves unflinchingly protect Bilbo from the trolls when they had, at the time, little to be grateful towards Bilbo for. The fact that Bilbo even agreed to set off on the Quest of Erebor, abandoning the sanctuary and comfort of Bag End, also proves his devout loyalty to Gandalf.
