One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

When the Elves who forged the Rings of Power heard Sauron recite these words in Black Speech while forging the One Ring, they uncovered Sauron’s true intentions. That is, to use the One Ring to corrupt the bearers of the other Rings of Power to make the whole of Middle Earth part of his dominion. In order to forge the One Ring, Sauron had to invest much of his power into its creation. This joined the fate of Sauron directly with that of the Ring. Sauron’s power was amplified as long as the Ring continues to exist; if it were to be destroyed, so too would much of Sauron’s strength.

Sauron would eventually lose the One Ring in the War of the Last Alliance when battling a coalition of men and elves. It was cut from his hand by Isildur of Gondor and Arnor. Ignoring the counsel of others to destroy the Ring in the depths of Mordor, Isildur chose instead to keep it as a family heirloom. He would eventually be betrayed by the Ring when he was ambushed in the Gladden Fields by Orcs. The ring slipped from his finger whilst he was attempting an escape, he was killed in the river he was trying to cross. It would lay hidden for two and a half thousand years before being discovered by the Hobbit Deagol on a fishing trip with his cousin Smeagol. Smeagol was overcome by the allure of the Ring and killed his cousin for possession of it. The Ring would cause Smeagol’s exile into the Misty Mountains and turn him into the creature Gollum. It stayed with Smeagol for 500 years, giving him unnaturally long life, until it left Gollum to be discovered by the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. This is featured in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and would lead to the events in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
